Edmond Hamilton, a writer of science fiction and comic books, was born on October 21, 1904 and died on February 1, 1977. His comic book career began in 1942, when he began a 20 year career writing for DC Comics. (I incorrectly said 1946 in the episode.)
The Edmond Hamilton story featured in this episode is THE LAST DAYS OF SUPERMAN, from SUPERMAN 156, October 1962, published around August 2, 1962. It was reprinted in: SUPERMAN IN THE SIXTIES, SUPERMAN: THE GREATEST STORIES EVER TOLD vol. II and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN vol. III.
