Episode #215: Superman Comic Book Cover Dated June 1960: Action Comics #265!

ACTION COMICS 265, June 1960, was published on April 28, 2012. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of a dime. The editor was Mort Weisinger, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye, which featured Supergirl in her 4th cover appearance. They were also the art team for the 13 page Superman story in this issue, THE SUPERMAN FROM OUTER SPACE, written by Otto Binder and reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS:SUPERMAN vol. II.

Supergirl starred in the 13 page story, THE DAY SUPERGIRL REVEALED HERSELF, written by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and drawn by Jim Mooney, and reprinted in SUPERGIRL ARCHIVES vol. I and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERGIRL vol. I. This was the 13th silver age story for one of the Superman titles, and the 26th overall so far in the silver age.

SUPERMAN'S PAL JIMMY OLSEN 20, April 1957, was published around February 21, 1957 (which was my late Grandmother's 47th birthday). This issue contained 32 pages for the cover price of a dime. Mort Weisinger was the editor, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye. All three 8 page stories were done by the same creative team, writer Otto Binder, penciller Curt Swan and inked by Ray Burnley. They have been reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY vol. I.

SUPERMAN 137, May 1960, was published on march 17, 1960. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of 10¢. The editor was Mort Weisinger, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye.

The 26 page issue length story in this issue was titled THE TWO FACES OF SUPERMAN (the 9th UNKNOWN TALE OF SUPERMAN), written by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and inked by John forte. This story has been reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN vol. II.

- Chapter 1: THE SUPER-BRAT FROM KRYPTON (9 pages).

- Chapter 2: THE YOUNG SUPER-BULLY (9 pages).

- Chapter 3: SUPERMAN VS. SUPER-MENACE (8 pgs).

ACTION COMICS 264, May 1960, was published on March 31, 1960. It contained 32 pages for a dime. Mort Weisinger was the editor, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye.

The 13 page Superman story was titled THE SUPERMAN BIZARRO, written by Otto Binder, pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye.

Supergirl starred in the 12 page story, SUPERGIRL GETS ADOPTED, written by Jerry siegel and drawn by Jim Mooney.

SUPERMAN'S PAL JIMMY OLSEN 19, March 1957, was published around January 15, 1957. It contained 32 pages for a dime. Mort Weisinger was the editor, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye. The cover for this issue also served as the cover to SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY vol. I, which is the reprint edition in which this issue appeared. All 3 8 page stories were written by Otto Binder and pencilled by Curt Swan.

- THE TWO JIMMY OLSENS was inked by Ray Burnley.

- THE HUMAN GEIGER COUNTER was inked by Stan Kaye.

- SUPERMAN'S KID BROTHER was inked by Ray Burnley.

WORLD'S FINEST COMICS 87, March/April 1957, was published around January 31, 1957. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of 10¢. Jack Schiff was the editor, and the cover was pencilled by Dick Sprang and inked by Stan Kaye.

The 12 page Superman / Batman story in this issue was titled THE REVERSED HEROES, written by Bill Finger, pencilled by Dick Sprang, and inked by Stan Kaye. It was reprinted in WORLD'S FINEST COMICS ARCHIVE vol. II and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: WORLD'S FINEST vol. I.

Green Arrow starred in the 6 page story, THE GREEN SWORD. THE GRAND COMIC BOOK DATABASE listed the writer as possibly Dave Wood, while MIKE'S AMAZING WORLD OF DC COMICS did not list a writer. Both websites list the artist as George Papp.

Tomahawk starred in the issue's final six page story, THE RETIREMENT OF TOMAHAWK, drawn by Nick Cardy.

In the fourth annual Year In Review episode, we say Goodbye to the old Superman and say Hello to the New 52 Man of Steel.


I review the final issues of the SUPERMAN: GROUNDED storyline in 2011 in SUPERMAN 707 - 714, the Lex Luthor BLACK RING story in ACTION COMICS 897 - 900,as well as the REIGN OF THE DOOMSDAYS story in ACTION COMICS 900 - 904.


Also reviewed in this episode are the Superman specials: SUPERMAN 80 PG. GIANT, JIMMY OLSEN one shot, SUPERMAN BEYOND 0 and FLASHPOINT: PROJECT SUPERMAN 1 - 3.
Bringing in the new Superman are ACTION COMICS 1 - 4 and SUPERMAN 1 - 3 (issue 4 was published on Wednesday, December 28, 2011, and I was not able to purchase that issue in time for this episode).


I express my views about how the old Superman continuity ended, and my thoughts about the early issues of the New Superman.
