Guest host Michael Bradley, host of THE THRILLING ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN and co-host of GREEN LANTERN'S LIGHT podcasts, joins me for this episode to look at SUPERMAN 149 & ACTION COMICS 282. The recording of our skype conversation has some intermittent fading of brief bits of audio, but it shouldn't be difficult to understand the conversation.

SUPERMAN 149, November 1961, was published around September 14, 1961 (a little more than a week before my first birthday). It contained 32 pages for the cover price of 10¢. Mort Weisinger was the editor, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by George Klein, who were the art team for the story in this issue.

The 25 page story in this issue was titled THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN, written by Jerry Siegel. This story was reprinted in THE GREATEST SUPERMAN STORIES EVER TOLD, DC'S GREATEST IMAGINARY STORIES and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN vol. III. This was Siegel's 34th sliver age Superman story, and his 89th overall for the era. Previously, Siegel wrote BIZARRO'S AMONG BUDDIES, published in ADVENTURE COMICS 289, October 1961, which was drawn by John Forte.

THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN was divided into three parts:

- LEX LUTHOR, HERO (8 pgs.)

- LUTHOR'S SUPER BODYGUARD (9 pgs.)

- THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN (8 pgs.)

ACTION COMICS 282, November 1961, was published on September 28, 1961 (one day after my first birthday). Mort Weisinger was the editor, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye.

The 11 page Superman story was titled SUPERMAN'S TOUGHEST DAY, written by Bill Finger and drawn by Al Plastino. This story was reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN vol. III.

The 13 page Supergirl story was titled THE SUPERGIRL OF TOMORROW, written by Jerry Siegel and drawn by Jim Mooney. This was Siegel's 56th Superman Family story, and his 90th overall for the era.

This issue marked the end of an era. The DC titles published with the November or November/December 1961 cover date were the last DC titles to carry a 10¢ cover price. Except for a few of DC's romance titles which were published the previous month before the rest of DC's December 1961 cover dated titles, the rest carried a 12¢ cover price. This was the cover price that I remember new comic books carrying when I first began reading comic books.
