ACTION COMICS 330, November 1965, was published on September 30, 1965 (three days after my fifth birthday). It contained 32 pages for the cover price of 12¢. Mort Weisinger was the editor, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan, inked by George Klein and lettered by Ira Schnapp. It featured the Supergirl story at the back of the issue.

This issue had a really good cover, and I'm glad they decided to illustrate the Supergirl story, which I think was the better story. "The Strange 'S' Spell on Superman" was a good Red Kryptonite story, but I liked the "back-up" story more. The continued stories of Supergirl, with their "soap opera" quality (as one of the letters in this issue described), made the reader want to keep coming back for more. The "done in one" stories, typical of Superman in the Silver Age, were often fun, but, if a reader missed one, it didn't feel as if you were missing a vital part of a story, as you would in reading a continued story.
ReplyDeleteIn the Superman story, it was fortunate for Superman that the Red K effect "came and went" before wearing off completely, which was unusual. It gave him a chance to think clearly and try to thwart the bad guy's plan, and even get Krypto to help. Good boy, Krypto!
I'm really caught up in the Supergirl story, though, and each part really makes me want to see the next. It was torture in those days, waiting a month before the next issue came out, and hoping that, whatever the sometimes spotty distribution of comics, my local newsstand or candy store would have the next issue.
In "Supergirl's Duel with Dr. Supernatural", I can't help but imagine that the heroes Supergirl has met and helped on the Purple Planet will be instrumental in getting her powers back permanently and making her way back home, but the story is set up to make Dr. Supernatural appear to be almost undefeatable, which makes for a compelling story. I can hardly wait for your coverage of Action Comics #331.
I agree with you,the Supergirl story was the best one in this issue.
