Superman Annual #1!

Download Episode #222!

SUPERMAN ANNUAL 1, 1960, was published on June 23, 1960, during the same month as SUPERMAN 139 and ACTION COMICS 267, which were covered in Episode #220. This issue contained 80 pages for the cover price of a quarter. In today's money that would be the equivalent of $1.92. The editor was Mort Weisinger, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye. This issue was reprinted in 1998 in a replica edition, which contained an introduction by Superman editor and now DC Executive Editor Mike Carlin, on the inside of a gate fold cover.

The nine stories reprinted in this 80 page Annual were:

- SUPERMAN'S FIRST EXPLOIT (8 pgs.), originally published as the first story of SUPERMAN 106, July 1956, published around May 3, 1956. It was written by Edmond Hamilton, pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye. This story's only reprint appearance was in this Annual and the 1998 replica edition.

- THE WITCH OF METROPOLIS (8 pgs.) originally published as the third and final story in SUPERMAN'S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE 1, March/April 1958, released around June 14, 1958. It was written by Otto Binder and drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger. This story was also reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY vol. II. Since we haven't begun covering Lois Lane's solo title yet, this story will serve as a preview of what we have to look forward to.

- THE SUPERGIRL FROM KRYPTON (8 pgs.), originally published as the third and final story in ACTION COMICS 252, May 1959, originally released around March 31, 1959. It was written by Otto Binder and drawn by Al Plastino. This story was reprinted in the single issue replica editions of DC SILVER AGE CLASSICS 1 and MILLENNIUM EDITION 32, as well as the reprint collections, SUPERGIRL ARCHIVES vol. I, SUPERMAN IN THE FIFTIES, SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN vol. I and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERGIRL vol. I.

- A VISIT FROM SUPERMAN'S PAL (8 pgs.), originally published as the second of three stories in SUPERBOY 55, March 1957, released around January 3, 1957, in an issue we have not yet featured in our coverage of the Superman Family of titles. It was written by Otto Binder, pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Ray Burnley. This story was reprinted in SUPERBOY: THE GREATEST TEAM UP STORIES EVER TOLD.

- THE GIRL IN SUPERMAN'S PAST (10 pages), originally published as the third and final story in SUPERMAN 129, May 1959, released around March 19, 1959. It was written by Bill Finger, pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye. This iconic Superman story has been reprinted in a number of editions: SUPERMAN FROM THE THIRTIES TO THE SEVENTIES, THE GREATEST SUPERMAN STORIES EVER TOLD, SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN vol. I and SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF TOMORROW ARCHIVES vol. I. We covered this story several times, in Episode 60 and Episode 188. In the middle of this story was a two page map of Krypton, written by Jerry Siegel and drawn by Al Plastino.

- THE EXECUTION OF KRYPTO (8 pgs.), originally published as the second of three stories in SUPERBOY 67, September 1958, released around July 3, 1958. It was written by Otto Binder and drawn by George Papp, and was only reprinted in this Annual.

- THE FATTEST GIRL IN METROPOLIS (8 pgs.), originally published as the third and final story in SUPERMAN'S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE 5, November/December 1958, released around September 11, 1958. It was written by Otto Binder and drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger, and was also reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY vol. II.

- THE SUPER BRAIN OF JIMMY OLSEN (8 pgs.), originally published as the third and final story in SUPERMAN'S PAL JIMMY OLSEN 22 (and is a preview of next week's episode). It was written by Otto Binder, pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Ray Burnley. This story was also reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY vol. I and SUPERMAN: THE AMAZING TRANSFORMATIONS OF JIMMY OLSEN.

- The ninth and final story reprinted in SUPERMAN ANNUAL 1 was THE SUPER KEY TO FORT SUPERMAN (12 pgs.), originally published in ACTION COMICS 241, June 1958, released around April 29, 1958. It was written by Jerry Coleman, pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye. It was reprinted in THE GREATEST SUPERMAN STORIES EVER TOLD, SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF TOMORROW ARCHIVES vol. I and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN vol. I. This story began our coverage of Superman's silver age stories in Episode 160.

Since we looked at the other DC titles published during the same month as SUPERMAN ANNUAL 1 in Episode 220, this feature will not be repeated in this episode.
