Episode #160: The Search For The Silver Age Superman!

Action Comics 241, June 1958!

Download Episode 160!

As I mentioned on my Superman year in review episode, I am beginning 2011 by changing the focus of this podcast to the silver age Superman. The first part of the episode chronicles my search for when the silver age of Superman stories can be said to have begun.

The featured Superman story of this episode is THE SUPER KEY TO FORT SUPERMAN, from ACTION COMICS 241, June 1958, published around April 29, 1958. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of a dime. The editor was Mort Weisinger, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye. The story was written by Jerry Coleman, pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye. This story has been reprinted in THE GREATEST SUPERMAN STORIES EVER TOLD, SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF TOMORROW ARCHIVES, vol. I and SHOWCASE PRESENTS; SUPERMAN, vol. I.

A regular feature of my coverage of the silver age Superman stories will include a look at the other DC Comics titles published that month, in this case the cover date of Jone (or June/July) 1958.

Then I discuss how I will cover the silver age of Superman stories, all the way to editor Mort Weisinger's retirement in 1970. That should keep me busy for a while.
