Download Episode 95!

Harry Donenfeld was born around October 16, 1893 There does not seem to be any documentation to pinpoint either his exact birth date, or the place in Romania he was born to Jewish parents. He would take eventually take over his brothers' printing business. After hiring Jack Liebowitz, subject of episode #94, through a series of business deals Harry would be leading the dominant comic book company for decades, until the rise of Marvel Comics in the 1960's. He and Jack are considered the villains to many Superman fans in Siegel's and Shuster's struggles over the copyright to Superman.

Episode #94: Happy Birthday, Jack Liebowitz!

Download Episode 94!

Jack Liebowitz was born on October 10, 1900 and died on December 11, 2000. His life literally spanned the 20th century. While a lot of Superman fans would want to give him a lump of coal for his birthday if he was still alive, he is an important figure in Superman's history. Among the many excellent resources about comic book history is MEN OF TOMORROW: GEEKS, GANGSTERS AND THE BIRTH OF THE COMIC BOOK, by Gerard Jones.

Lex Luthor's traditional birthday is September 28. To commemorate his birthday this year the feature of this episode is LEX LUTHOR: THE UNAUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY, written by James D. Hudnall, drawn by Eduardo Barreto and colored by Adam Kubert. Mike Carlin edited the book.

It is the story of down on his luck writer Paul Sands, who discovers the truth of Lex Luthor's rise to wealth and power, and endangers his life, and the career of Clark Kent, in the process. It was published in 1989, on May 16th. It was 48 pages long and had cardboard covers, with the cover price of $4.95. I could find no reprint information for this book, so you will have to check the back issue bins of your local comic book store or on the internet.
