This episode begins an annual summer feature of Superman's "imaginary stories". Part I is a brief history of DC's imaginary stories. The featured publication for this episode is THE GREATEST IMAGINARY STORIES EVER TOLD, published on September 1, 2005. The Superman imaginary stories featured in this episode are:

Featured in THE GREATEST IMAGINARY STORIES EVER TOLD:

MR. AND MRS. CLARK (SUPERMAN) KENT, SUPERMAN'S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE #19, August 1960.

THE AMAZING STORY OF SUPERMAN-RED AND SUPERMAN-BLUE, SUPERMAN #162, July 1963, also reprinted in THE GREATEST SUPERMAN STORIES EVER TOLD and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN vol. IV.

THE THREE WIVES OF SUPERMAN, SUPERMAN'S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE #51, August 1964.

THE FANTASTIC STORY OF SUPERMAN'S SONS, SUPERMAN #166, January 1964.

The final story of THE GREATEST IMAGINARY STORIES EVER TOLD is SUPERMAN AND BATMAN -- BROTHERS in WORLD'S FINEST COMICS #172, December 1967.

The last official imaginary story was WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE MAN OF TOMORROW, originally published in SUPERMAN #423 and ACTION COMICS #583, September 1986. This story was reprinted in DC UNIVERSE; THE STORIES OF ALAN MOORE and WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE MAN OF TOMORROW.

The DC Comics Annuals for 1991 tied into the ARMAGEDDON 2001 mini-series. The 1991 Superman Annuals were:

SUPERMAN ANNUAL #3 was titled EXECUTION 2001.

ACTION COMICS #3, titled EXECUTIVE ACTION.

THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN ANNUAL #3, titled BEYOND THE REACH OF TIME.

Beginning in 1991, DC began publishing "imaginary stories" inder the ELSEWORLDS imprint. The Superman ELSEWORLDS stories were:

SUPERMAN: SPEEDING BULLETS, 1993.

ELSEWORLD'S FINEST: SUPERGIRL AND BATGIRL, 1994.

Also in 1994, the DC Annuals carried the ELSEWORLDS banner. The 1994 Superman ELSEWORLDS Annuals were:

SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL ANNUAL #3, titled UNFORGIVEN.

SUPERMAN ANNUAL #6, titled THE FERAL MAN OF STEEL.

THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN ANNUAL #6, titled THE LONGEST NIGHT.

SUPERBOY ANNUAL #1, titled MEN OF STEEL.
