Episode #7: Happy Birthday, Superman!

Download Episode 7!

Today, February 27, 2008 is my son Will's 18th birthday! We were only able to send him a card, since he is in Marine Corps boot camp. I'll give a brief update on his progress, then I feature Superman's birthday, which is February 29th, and this is a leap year. According to the Kryptonian calendar, Superman's (Kal-El's) birthday is the 38th day of Erox in the year 9998. I searched the web for details about the Kryptonian calendar, but really couldn't find anything. The only thing I could find was a forum on the COMIC BOOK RESOURCES website: www.forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=129334 . According to some members of this forum, the Kryptonian year equals 1.38 Earth years.
Other important dates in Superman's life:
May 3, 1938: the approximate date that ACTION COMICS #1, cover date June 1938, was first on sale.
June 18: Clark Kent's birthday. In some issues of SUPERMAN and ACTION COMICS, the date is given as June 10. It corresponds with the ACTION COMICS #1 cover date, and also refers to Clark's Earth Day, or the day his rocket reached Earth and was found by the Kents. T
he remainder of the podcast features a celebration of a special day in Superman's life: THE KEY TO FORT SUPERMAN, published in ACTION COMICS #241, June 1958.

Episode #6: Superman: The Year In Review!

Download Episode 6!

In this episode, I want to take the time to share my enthusiasm about current superman storylines in the various Superman titles. Two monthly Superman titles that are no longer on my pull list are SUPERMAN CONFIDENTIAL and SUPERMAN / BATMAN. I've had to drop these to add other titles to my reading list and stay on my budget. My favorite Superman titles, in reverse order are:
3. SUPERMAN
2. ACTION COMICS
1. ALL-STAR SUPERMAN.

Episode #5: Happy Valentine's Day! Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane!

Download Episode 5!

I hope everyone enjoyed Valentine's Day with their loved one. I know I did. I begin this episode with a small correction: NEW GODS issues 12 - 18 and MISTER MIRACLE 19-25 were done by other writers and artists. Jack Kirby was not involved with theses issues. By this point he did not work for DC.

Valentine's Day episodes will always feature the loves of Superman's life, and we start this first Valentine's Day episode with Lois Lane. She has been with Superman and Clark Kent from the beginning in ACTION COMICS #1. She even had her own title: SUPERMAN'S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE from 1958 - 1974 for 137 issues. Some key issues in the relationship of Lois and Clark Kent / Superman:
ACTION COMICS #484, June 1978, SUPERMAN TAKES A WIFE (reprinted in SUPERMAN IN THE SEVENTIES
SUPERMAN #50 (second series, 1986- ), Dec. 1990. Clark proposes and Lois accepts.
ACTION COMICS #662, Feb. 1991, SECRETS IN THE NIGHT. Clark reveals his secret identity to Lois.
SUPERMAN: THE WEDDING ALBUM, Dec. 1996.
The first solo Lois Lane story: LOIS LANE: GIRL REPORTER from SUPERMAN #28, May/June 1944, reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY VOL. I.
The featured artist of this episode is Kurt Schaffenberger, who drew the first 81 issues of SUPERMAN'S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE. Lastly I look at the first Lois Lane comic book I can remember reading: SUPERMAN'S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE #67, Aug. 1966, LOIS LANE -- QUEEN AND SUPERMAN COMMONER!

I also have an update on my son in Marine Corps boot camp, and a little on how I spent my Valentine's Day.
