This week is a sad anniversary in Superman history. The writer and co-creator of Superman, Jerry Siegel, died on January 28, 1996, at the age of 81, in his California home. After sharing a brief update on my son's leaving for Marine Corps boot camp, I feature Siegel and Shuster's pre-Superman creations for the companies that would become DC Comics as we know it. Then I look at Jerry Siegel's other super hero creations that he did with other artists for DC. Next, I review Jerry's post Superman comic book career, and his return to DC Comics in the 1960's and why. Finally, I review some developments in the continuing legal battle between the Siegel and Shuster hiers and DC over Superman's copyright, and a separate lawsuit over Superboy.

After sharing my favorite Superman stories last episode, this time I want to talk about my favorite comic book artist, Curt Swan. Starting with a brief biography, I then highlight key issues from Curt Swan's career, and why I enjoy his art style so much. At the end of the podcast I share some of the earliest Curt Swan stories I remember reading as a young boy, that I have been able to find copies of again and add to my comic book collection:
SUPERMAN #181, Nov. 1965, THE SUPER SCOOP OF MONA VINE and THE SUPERMAN OF 2965.
WORLD'S FINEST #155, Feb. 1966, THE 1,000TH EXPLOIT OF SUPERMAN AND BATMAN. This was the first comic book I remember my Dad buying me as a small boy. WORLD'S FINEST #159, Aug. 1966, THE CAPE AND COWL CROOKS.

To read more about Curt Swan's life and career read CURT SWAN: A LIFE IN COMICS, by Eddy Zeno, published by Vanguard Productions in 2002.

Superman Fan Podcast Episode #0: The Origin Issue: Who I Am And How I Came To Be!

Download Episode 0!

In this first episode I introduce myself. You will learn about my comic reading and collecting history and how Superman came to be my favorite character. Next I share how I first heard about podcasts and began listening to comic book podcasts, and how I decided to do my own podcast. I'll review the general content these episodes will contain and post some questions so that you can participate in this podcast. That way, SUPERMAN FAN PODCAST can become a dialogue between Superman Fans.
